Reclaiming ‘Cunt’ Pt. II

everythingisproblematic:

So I got a little curious.

Somehow, I got it in my mind that everyone perceived cunt the way I did: as a (formerly) hateful word that shouldn’t be used. Period. It didn’t even cross my mind that some people, especially women, wouldn’t be offended if some asshole called them a cunt.

Therefore, I chose the most technologically effective way to survey people in the 21st century. I posted a status update and asked people to tell me their genuine opinions about the word “cunt.”

One 30-something mother of two and Education major responded: “For me, it is the ULTIMATE unspeakable…like Voldemort! It is the word-that-shall-not-be-said and the ONLY ONE I truly feel this strong about.”

Which is an answer I, to say the least, loved. Firstly because of the Harry Potter reference. Secondly, because she recognized how vile a word “cunt” used to be. You don’t fuck around with it because it can hurt people. It’s that simple.

A 20-something male student said: “I think it’s one of those word that you have to choose extremely wisely when it use. (obviously very offensive to some people and should generally not be said, although I do think women over exaggerate its offensiveness, which is the only real reason it shouldn’t be said). However, it can at times be so appropriate, when some people are just so unspeakably awful, etc. It’s just a word after all.”

In other words, cunt should be used sparingly because it’s so powerful but it can be appropriate. That seemed like a contradiction to me… Other people, more or less, said what he said: it’s a powerful and hateful word…so only use when appropriate!

When is it ever appropriate to slander a woman’s body?

If I have a $100 in my hand and someone takes it from me, they are:

A) Stealing

B) Doing what I wanted them to

C) Teaching me a valuable lesson about how to handle my money

ROUND 2!

The way to keep this from happing is:

A) create a culture where stealing is not accepted

B) hide my money

C) stop having money

Now what were you saying about rape being related to the way a person is dressed?

"Curvy women are real women. Skinny women are real women. Women who have had boob jobs or lip enhancements or liposuction are still real women. Size 0 may make no sense mathematically, but a woman who wears that size is as real as the one who wears a size 16. What makes us “real” people is not the shape of our flesh but our basic humanity. And we lose our humanity when we judge."

Someone else thinks this is ridiculous, right?

I don’t even know where to begin with what’s wrong with this. I’ll go with the assumption that not dressing ‘modestly’ means you don’t respect yourself.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what about MY eyes and what they behold?

And apparently men are incapable of seeing your body AND respecting you as a person.

I’m not sure if what I just wrote will ever see the light of day but

I needed someone to at least see this one bit

Condoms and contraceptives are used to promote an unhealthy, promiscuous, sex life.
Actually, condoms are used to promote a healthy sex life. Hence the term SAFE SEX. As for promiscuity, you can have whatever views you want on it, but saying that it’s because of contraceptives is like saying that people are overweight because of the existence of brownies. There might be a correlation, BUT THE BROWNIES ARE NOT MAKING YOU EAT THEM, and there are a lot of other (delicious) ways to get fat.
I ultimately did post the blog this excerpt is from- you can find it here: FemRage (Or… Um what?)

I am afraid that either she will be better than me and render my work irrelevant, or that she will be horrible, embarrass my entire gender, and make people less likely to listen to my work (thus rendering it irrelevant). I get that this feeling is fucked up and I do my best to work through it, but I cannot pretend it does not happen."
