In two weeks I’ll have the opportunity to read some of my writing in a showcase, along with two other undergrads and 5 or 6 graduate students. I am totally thrilled– MY WRITING WILL HAVE AN AUDIENCE. And what’s more authorial than doing a reading? Plus, being in undergrad in a showcase consisting mostly of grad students is really terrific.

Which brings me to the crux of this post– what the hell am I going to read? I have plenty of writing, so options isn’t a problem, but how do I pick? [read more]

Chelsee Bergen is a student of life. Also, a student of writing― more specifically screenwriting, and short fiction. She’s also a fan of the memoir, and has picked a tentative title for her own.

She is a second year at the University of Nevada, Reno, and a former Hampshire College HAMPster (read: hipster). She believed New England was a magical place where all her problems could be solved. As it turns out, she does not like New England; she hates the snow and likes to be the most pretentious person in the room. She still believes that New York City― not Disney Land― is the Happiest Place on Earth. It may also be the most miserable, but she can accept this because life is about balance.

“I’m in a conference room. On the wall behind me is a large cork-board– it’s massive. On the right wall there are glossy windows (horizontal and rectangular)– they let in light, but you can’t really see out of them (because I love light but am easily distracted by the outside world). I have a new resolution.

When I introduce myself, I’m going to say my preferred pronouns.

“I’m Chelsee. I use she/her pronouns.” (prefer?)

Maybe I can find a really awesome way to say it. I’ll think on it and let you know.

Perhaps at this point you’re asking yourself why I have made this resolution. Well, here’s the thing- I may use the pronouns which typically correspond to my assigned gender (with which I identify), but not everybody does. My experience of the general public (of which I am definitely a part) is that we either assume people identify with their assigned gender, or that their preferred pronouns/gender identity corresponds to their appearance in some way– which is a limiting and marginalizing assumption.

Application Nation

I submitted my USC application. I feel… so much better now that I’ve finally done it. I had kind of a freak out this morning, first getting all weird about doing final edits on my writing sample, then not feeling ready when I finished those edits, then finally uploading the essay and freaking out about whether I should list a second choice major on my application. Even though my application is crafted around Critical Studies in Cinematic Arts, I decided to list Creative Writing as my second choice major– I decided that it can’t hurt, and that I was not going to let my self come up with ways that it could be bad… Read more

"I just finished reading Emily Gould’s And the Heart Says Whatever- an autobiography about being “young and literary in New York City.” I’ve passed by it on the shelves at the bookstores probably a hundred times now, but the other day I finally bought it. I’m glad I didn’t buy it all of those other times I passed it, because now was the perfect time for me to read it. Reading about someone struggling through their twenties and dealing with things like shitty jobs and relationships and one night stands and wanting to write but also wanting to do absolutely nothing is… not where I’m currently at, but very near it."

When I like something, I really like it. I like to make the initial honeymoon period– when it’s all still new and very exciting– last as long as possible, which for me is achieved by surrounding myself with things related to the object of said affections… Some might say I become “obsessed.” Naturally, I was a born fan girl, ready to embrace cult classics and epidemics of the media.
