When I was 8 I moved from Washington D.C. to California and drove across the country in 2 weeks with my parents. I was so afraid that as we travelled from state to state I would become less and less “me,” so I spent the entire two weeks trying to catch my reflection in every possible place I could to see that I hadn’t changed. When I read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close I was immediately reminded of this and saw a little bit of myself in Oskar Schell. Now as a 23 year old college graduate, I aim to wander around the world for awhile, but this tattoo is my reminder that I am still me, no matter where I am or who I’m with.

Marvel Comics makes history with a gay X-Men marriage.

Marvel Comics’ Astonishing X-Men is set to experience a new sound effect on top of its booms, whams, and sknits: the bong of wedding bells. Specifically, it’s the wedding bells of Marvel’s first gay marriage between longtime X-Man Northstar and his civilian boyfriend, Kyle. After pairing up the couple in 2009, Marvel is officially tying their knot in June’s Astonishing X-Men #51.

On Tuesday I shared with you some of the thoughts Greg Rucka had about Hollywood, comics and women. Today he’s has an essay on io9 where he talks about writing female characters.

Here’s a sample:

Gender isn’t simply a biological trait; it’s a societal one. The female experience is different from that of the male, and if, as a male writer, you cannot accept that basic premise, then you will never, ever, be able to write women well. A man walking alone through Midtown Manhattan at three in the morning may have concerns for his safety, but I promise you, it’s a very different experience for a woman taking the same walk, and it’s different again for a man wearing a dress. Think about it. That’s a societal factor, and it’s a gendered one, and this is not and can not be subject to debate. If you’re looking to argue that sexism is a thing of the past, that the world is gender-blind, you’re not only wrong, you’re lying to yourself.

AFTER ALL, JOSS WHEDON HAS HAD HIS FAIR SHARE OF FEMALE ASS-KICKING HEROES, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY HE ALWAYS HAD A PENCHANT FOR MAKING THEM COMPELLING PEOPLE. IN HER PREVIOUS ROLE IN IRON MAN 2, BOTH SCARLET AND THE BLACK WIDOW CHARACTER WERE, WELL, FINE. BUT THERE IS NO DENYING SHE WAS PRETTY MUCH ONLY REQUIRED TO ALTERNATE BETWEEN SEXY/PROFESSIONAL AND KICK-ASS/PROFESSIONAL. THIS IS HOW MOST WOMEN’S ACTION ROLES ARE WRITTEN.

SO HOW DOES JOSS GO BEYOND THAT?

LOOK PEOPLE, IT’S NOT MAGIC. IT’S NOT EVEN THAT HARD. IT ALL COMES FROM A PLACE OF RESPECT. YOU BASICALLY SIT THERE AS A WRITER AND SAY THE FOLLOWING: “I will not take the easy route because I assume that is all that is expected of me. I will make this character a fully-realized person. I will give her a range of emotions. I will give her capacities beyond being sexy and kicking ass. I will give her great moments. I will not make her fight the other woman. I will give her the same stuff I’m required to give all the other characters.” THAT’S IT.

AND THAT’S HOW WE GOT A BLACK WIDOW WHO HAS GREAT MOMENTS, A SENSE OF HISTORY, A SENSE OF EMOTIONAL GRAVITAS, A RANGE OF EMOTIONS, AND HEY, WOULDN’T YOU KNOW IT? ALSO HAPPENS TO BE SEXY AND ASS-KICKING TOO. WHODATHUNK?
